Top 5: Books for Scrum Masters

A worrying trend in the software industry is the complete lack of scrum masters with the ability to coach an organization towards a higher level of agility. Just like with Product Owners who are merely scribes, this can do much damage. As much as 60% of Product Owners and Scrum Masters received no training at all before starting their job.

Luckily, there is a mountain of material to read that can give you a head start in the world of mastering scrum. This list will give you my top 5 recommendations, but don’t think you’re done after reading these. Being a Scrum Master is about bringing the theory into practice and empirically adjusting based on your findings. It’s a road one can only walk. But you’ve got to start somewhere and there is no better place to start than with these 5 books. I’ve avoided the 5 books for Product Owners here, although it wouldn’t be a bad idea to read them too. Especially Lencioni’s The Five Dysfunctions of a Team.
