The number #1 question I receive from new product owners is which books they should read to help them understand the role better. There are hundreds and hundreds of fantastic books out there, from very fundamental to highly specialized material. With this list, I try to give some recommendations that changed the way I look at product management and ownership from a fundamental perspective. They are all readily available and have helped many aspiring product people with their journey. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants to firmly grasp what being in Product is all about.

#1: The Professional Product Owner: Leveraging Scrum as a Competitive Advantage — Don McGreal & Ralph Jocham

The Professional Product Owner

This is my number #1 pick for a simple reason: if you read just one book on product ownership, this one should be it. It not only captures the essentials of the role in a highly understandable way, but it also goes in hard on the personality and traits of a great product owner. A perfect combination of anecdotes, personal stories and observations, fundamental theory, and practical solutions. I couldn’t recommend this book…
