A Vacation from Working From Home

It used to be so normal. Taking a vacation to recharge after a year or so of hard work. A trip to get your mind off of things, to relax, to read a good book, or to get active.

Yes, please.

I, and many people are like this, have not taken a proper vacation since COVID-19 hit. Discussing this with my team, I found out that one of the main reasons for this is the inability to travel. It impacts our decision to take time off greatly. When we’re working from home, and our vacation is largely spent at home, does time off feel the same?

Now most borders are back open, and people can travel again. My team is starting to use its PTO to go on vacation again, but this still bothers me. We’re still working from home. One vacation a year is generally not enough to fully recharge, we have 25 vacation days for a reason (in The Netherlands, your mileage may vary). Is it possible to switch off completely when your home and workspaces are the same?

Risk of Burnout

Burnout is a risk in all work settings as in an effort to do more, professionals sometimes push themselves beyond their limits and end up hurting their job performance.
